Pushpagiri-Monsoon Blues

I always like getting drenched in monsoon, I got drenched in monsoon at Irupu falls last year and ever since have decided to get myself wet at least once every monsoon, so I decided to go back to coorg on a new adventure this year. After long deliberations with friends we zeroed in on pushpagiri trek and Malahali falls near somwarpet. We wanted to trek and come back the same day, We went in my ritz car, but were very apprehensive if the car can be parked at base camp of trek, is it safe to leave it there, but finally we decided to go by car

We left at 4 in the morning, the drive till kushalnagar outskirts was uneventful, except for intermittent rain, it was difficult driving in the rain with vehicles coming in opposite direction with high beam. At kushalnagar we were confused about the diversion to somwarpet, after checking with few localites we found the right road and started towards somwarpet.Somwarpert is around 40 km from kushalnagar,it took us nearly 1.5 hrs to reach ,the road was in bad condition and it was difficult to avoid all the pot holes. We reached somwarpet by 7.30.Somwarpet is at higher level from surrounding roads, so it was steep climb to the town, as I never driven up a steep and with my limited driving skill,it was a thrill to drive up in 1st and 2nd gears. After reaching Somwarpet we had breakfast at kanara hotel next to bus stand,I selected puttu-local delicacy(Made of Rice Powder),the rest stayed with regular tested idli sambar. After heavy breakfast we started enquiring about the pushpagiri, immediately we were warned by locals not to try climbing the pushpagiri hills in this weather, as the rocks will be very slippery and lot of accidents do happen especially climbing down the rocks due to lack of grip. We got a little scared and but decided to go a little further and check for ourselves if we can climb.

We left somwarpet and started towards pushpagiri,we thought pushpagiri was nearby to somwarpet, but to our surprise the place was 30 kms away from somwarpet on the somwarpet -subhramanya road. After few kms the roads started to be isolated,no one was to be seen, also due to winding roads , were not able to go fast. The roads started getting narrower,we were worried if we were on wrong road, but since no one was available to check we continued. We started encountering steep climbs on our way, with roads becoming more winding, I ended up driving in 1st gear on steep climbs. On the way ,on one of the turns at a blind spot, in total silence a Govt bus came out of the blue, all four of us were shocked as we didn’t hear the bus coming and we just about managed to avoid an accident, I jumped of my driver seat ,it is scary moment negotiating a bus on winding road, but if it is a complete surprise like this after not encountering any vehicle for half an hour is something else.

Finally we reached the diversion from highway to mentioning malahli falls and pushpagiri trek.It is 7.5 kms from this diversion. The roads on this diversion were even worse, winding steep, dipping,my driving skills were put to test all the time.Only good thing was there were no vehicles, so we had the road for ourselves. We reached malahali falls around 9,we were still confused whether to go ahead and trek or visit malahali falls and come back, finally we decided we would go to malahali falls for an hour come back and continue our journey to pushpagiri for trek. The road to malahali was very narrow,we had to pay Rs 20 to bidahalli village folks to go towards malahali falls. We were warned by them not to take the car beyond the parking board mentioned 1 km further. After few mins of driving ,we were worried whether we can go and come back through this mud road, but we continued to go till the parking area, but just before the parking area there is a stretch having a steep down, which was fully slushy with rocks put to make some sort of road, we stopped got down to check if we can through this area and then decided we will continue, once we started negotiating this stretch,I new we had made a mistake, the car got stuck in the mud and we had to spend 15 -20 mins to get the car back from that stretch, with lot of Tyre burning, slush flying as well as near fatal accident due to my ignorance of car. After trying to get the stuck car out of mud for a few mins ,I switched of the car and immediately car started spiraling backwards, as all new cars come with hydraulic brakes and they don’t work when car is switched off, finally in the nick of time,I used to hand brakes to stop the car,Luckily we managed to stay in one piece. Am not sure how long it would have taken if there was an accident, as the place is as isolated as it get. We parked the car and decided to walk to malahali falls.

The malahali falls is the best falls I have ever seen, in my limited travel adventure. It is located in between the great western ghats and it looks majestic. As I am also a budding photographer, had decided to carry my camera in the rain, inspite of friends warnings.I tried taking a few snaps in different manual modes .The falls still is unexplored, very few people know about it and it is very difficult reaching here if we don’t have ur own vehicle. There was complete silence except for the waterfall sound,I felt great about making this trip as I couldn’t have gone to a more beautiful place to enjoy the monsoon.Coorg is very beautiful throughout the year, but during monsoon coorg transforms itself into something special with its greenery,I just love it. Since the waterfalls was unexplored and as only now people were coming to know about it,steps were under construction to go near the waterfalls similar to jog falls. We started going down after taking few snaps from top, there was steps for a particular distance, after which if was a similar to trek trail ,we started slipping and down pour started getting heavier,so we decided we will see malahali falls and go back,no point taking risk and trekking to pushpagiri,I had great difficulty trieng to save my camera from rain, taking snaps at view points and going down.I had decided to trek in sandals and due to lack of grip was finding it diffcult. Finally after 40 mins from top we reached under the waterfall. The flows was very fast and the amount of water being carried was too much,we drenched ourselves sitting next to waterfalls, took some snaps in rain, saw the clouds in western come and disappear.

Finally at 10.30 we started back, couple of us got headaches after getting wet under waterfalls,on our way up from waterfalls we met another group from Bangalore who were coming down to explore the waterfall. We met the rickshaw driver who had got them from somwarpet,he had parked his rickshaw in front of our car, there was no way we could go before he removes his rickshaw, after few arguments asking him to repark,we went back to our car to change and leave. We used his rickshaw to change into dry clothes. As we finished changing he came back and reparked his auto.We left malahali at 11,after reaching the main road we decided we will go further and atleast visit temple at the foothill of pushpagiri.Pushagiri was another 4 km from malahali,We reached pushpagiri at around 12 ,the weather had cleared up by now,we went visited the temple, did a puja.We checked with priest who said it is 3 hrs to top from temple ,most people climb from this side and get down on other side after staying at top during night, since we hadnt planned night stay,we had no choice, but to return back. But before turning back we wanted to have a glimpse of what we had come to conquer on our way back,We went up a few 100ms up the trek trail and it started to rain,we had to return as we were already in dry clothes and we didn’t want move around getting ourselves completely drenched. We started back by 1 and after another uneventful drive reached mysore by 4.
